(So far, every time I have been playing, I go to Control Panel, lower the screen resolution to 800 X 600, and then immediately return it to the normal 1920 x 1080 after I stop playing.) most of what you list is what I already have.
THE BLACK MIRROR PC GAME HOW TO
Here's the result of following your suggestions: after finally figuring out how to get to these settings under my NVIDIA Control Panel - I've never been on that section of it before! - I followed your words carefully and found. I like the way you think, and the way you check things. Wow, thanks again for your amazingly informative help! (I'm sorry it's taken me a while to respond - been away on vacation for the end of this holiday week.) Neither a DEP problem nor a problem of missing support for 800圆00 by the display.

So it seems to be something new/different. And you're crash seems to be different from what have been described here, because you didn't say something about an error message. Otherwise it wouldn't be able to show the desktop if you switch the desktop resolution to 800圆00. So your case is a bit strange since if you display seems to support 800圆00 and/or scaling. Actually this option was simply made to support old programs/games that uses obsolete resolutions. If you had to do this, the option wouldn't even make sense, if the display don't support the resolution the program/game wants to display. And you don't need to change the desktop resolution to do this.
THE BLACK MIRROR PC GAME DRIVER
And this can be easily solved by setting the video driver to let the GPU do the scaling. This is one possible cause for the crashes of Black Mirror 1, if the used display doesn't support 800圆00 nor scaling. If you set the driver to let the display handle scaling, but the display don't support scaling and don't support the resolution it receives from a program/game, this program/game often crashes. If explained the driver settings more in detail here: Link This setting of course has only an effect if a program/game puts out a different resolution than is set as desktop resultion.
THE BLACK MIRROR PC GAME DRIVERS
Therefore you can set the video drivers to either let the display handle scaling (then the resolution isn't changed by the GPU) or to let the GPU do the scaling. And video chips (GPU) of video cards can do this. Some displays can do this if they receive data with a different than supported resolution. Scaling means that images with a certain resultion are converted to a different resultion.

To set the desktop resolution to 800圆00 is not what scaling means. So the game only supports this resolution.

Back then nobody imagined that there would be displays that don't support a resolution of 800圆00. You have to remember that this game is old.

Having a play with the settings now to see if setting it to scale in the GPU makes any difference Desktop resolution is set to 1920x1200, but scaling was set to Aspect Ratio/Display.
